The notion of process extends into all aspects of dance, including pedagogy, choreography, performance, therapy, and critique. Emphasis on process allows us to engage with body- or movement-based performance as a question, project, or problem set in motion, rather than a finished product already disappearing. Process refers to pedagogical methods, choreographic practices, performance operations, modes of reception, and critical reflection. Each of these can function not only as a means to an end, but also as a means of research into the social, the political, the theoretical, the experiential, and the embodied. DAB believes process-based approaches to performance can release new potentialities for artists, spectators, presenters, and the communities they serve.

DAB seeks to provide a platform where graduate students from across the country working in various aspects of dance, movement, and body-based performance can come together to dialogue about their research and interests. We invite proposals that consider the theme “Processing Dance” in various areas.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Process as critical and creative methodology

• How does discourse influence the development of artistic work and/or pedagogy? What new discourses are subsequently generated through its performance and/or teaching?
• How does process function in improvised performance?
• How can an ensemble share its process with others?

· Dance and technology

· How does dance participate in new developments in technology, media, or science?

· What are the connections between computer processing and performative processing?

· The temporality of process

· Does process have a timeline?

· Is there such a thing as a(n) (un)finished process?

· Can we read ritual or routine as process?

· The politics of process

· What kinds of movements (social, artistic, political, embodied) are required for, or mobilized by, choreographic processes?

· How might social dance process shared experience?

· Does process always invoke progress?

DAB welcomes proposals in the form of papers, performances, lecture-demonstrations, films, and mixed media. Alternative presentation forms are encouraged. Presentations should not exceed 15 minutes. The conference will be curated into panels.

True to its interdisciplinary scope, the DAB 2011 conference is organized by a committee of students from NYU’s Tisch Dance, Tisch Art & Public Policy, Tisch Performance Studies, Steinhardt School of Education, and Gallatin School of Individualized Study.
