Call For Proposals!

New York University presents:

Transitions: Dance Across the Board Graduate Student Conference

Hosted by the Tisch Dance Department, NYU, February 13, 2010

Call for Papers and Performances:

Dance Across the Board is seeking proposals that consider the theme: Transitions. Last year, at the inaugural DAB Conference, we explored the meaning and implications of an impulse to begin; this year we consider the shifts and transformations beyond the impulse, as we change from one movement, condition, or place to another. A transition refers to a passage from one thought to another, one body to another, one dance or social movement to another. In dance and related fields, transitions can be challenging, and yet they are essential parts of choreographic compositions, movement phrases, and even simple shifts of weight.

DAB seeks to provide a platform where graduate students from across the country working in various aspects of dance can come together to dialogue about their research and interests. Suggested areas of investigation include: transitions in theory, history, choreography, and practice; transitions in relation to the political, the social, the body, technology, education, community, and culture. Interpretations of the theme are encouraged as the conference promotes new ideas and possibilities.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • multi-directional shifts from student to performer, performer to teacher, teacher to choreographer, choreographer to scholar, etc.
  • transitions between concept, performance, analysis, documentation and critical writing
  • locating when/where one movement idea or moment ends and another begins
  • physical, biological, or emotional transitions within the body
  • gender variance in the body and performance
  • translations from the traditional to the contemporary
  • cross-cultural performance practices
  • how dance companies transition after the passing of choreographers, such as Merce Cunningham and Pina Bausch

Dance Across the Board welcomes proposals in the form of papers, performances, lecture-demonstrations, films, and mixed media. Alternative presentation forms are encouraged.
